2002 - Abstract pen and ink drawing of Jesus Christ on the cross. I chose to
represent Him abstractly and in black because, first of all, know one
knows how He really looked, except obviously those who saw Him.
Second, by the time He was dead on the cross the bible says that "His
visage (appearance) was marred (disfigured) more then any man",
(Isaiah 52:14). His whole body has pieces missing from the flogging
and from being beaten. He is also depicted in black because on the
cross He took upon Himself our sins in order that we could be reunited
to God, to escape His eternal judgment, and to be allowed into heaven.
The star of David is there because Jesus was a Jew.
Here's a few verses about Jesus from the bible:
"His visage was marred more than any man,
And His form more than the sons of men;"
(Isaiah 52:14)
"They pierced My hands and My feet;
I can count all My bones. (None of His bones were broken)
They look and stare at Me.
They divide My garments among them,
And for My clothing they cast lots."
(Psalms 22:16-18)
"I gave My back to those who struck Me,
And My cheeks to those who plucked out the beard;
I did not hide My face from shame and spitting."
(Isaiah 50:6)
"There is no beauty that we should desire Him.
He is despised and rejected by men,
A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.
And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him;
He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.
Surely He has borne our grief's
And carried our sorrows;
Yet we esteemed Him stricken,
Smitten by God, and afflicted.
But He was wounded for our transgressions,
He was bruised for our iniquities;
The chastisement for our peace was upon Him,
And by His stripes we are healed.
All we like sheep have gone astray;
We have turned, every one, to his own way;
And the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all."
(Isaiah 53:2-6)
"When they had twisted a crown of thorns, they put it on
His head, and a reed in His right hand. And they bowed
the knee before Him and mocked Him, saying, "Hail, King
of the Jews!" Then they spat on Him, and took the reed
and struck Him on the head. And when they had mocked
Him, they took the robe off Him, put His own clothes on
Him, and led Him away to be crucified."
(Matthew 27:29-31)
